At a recent gathering of Clarity alums, Marcia Donziger, Founder of MyLifeLine.org talked about the power of Trust. Trust drives out all fear is what Marcia kept repeating to herself as she was hanging 32 floors above downtown Denver. You may reasonably ask, as I did, what she was thinking to even consider an activity that has her suspended 32 floors above the hard concrete of Denver – the equivalent of 1.5 football fields.
Marcia was raising funds for the non-profit organization she founded over five years ago, MyLifeLine.org. More cautious founders might have considered being dunked in water at a carnival, dressing up in a silly outfit or some other outlandish activity to create a donations buzz. Marcia chose something that would test her courage and get a lot of attention.
She told the Clarity audience that as she was preparing to go over the edge to rappel down the side of the building, she kept saying: I know I am safe; I trust the equipment; I trust the people who are keeping me safe; I trust my preparation; and I trust my ability to do this. Just thinking, saying and feeling trust kept her fear from stopping her.
But, it was far more than trust that gave Marcia the courage and determination to accomplish this high altitude feat. She was serving a larger purpose that has been her passionate vision for many years. She was doing this to raise awareness and money for her dream.
MyLifeLine.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that encourages cancer patients and caregivers to create free, customized websites. Their mission is to empower patients to build an online support community of family and friends to foster connection, inspiration, and healing.
Marcia says: “I believe a strong support community is critical to healing. Cancer patients and cancer caregivers need an easy, effective way to streamline communications during treatment to stay connected and inspired, which benefits the healing process.”
We all need a passionate purpose that serves something larger than ourselves. It is this purpose that brings the vibrancy and vitality into our daily lives and gives us the strength and courage to do our version of crawling over the edge of a building high above the ground, and trust our ability to get to the bottom safely.
Did you also notice that she did this with a wonderful sense of style? I assume the pink fringed leggings kept people from thinking she was a window washer.
